This vintage German stoneware wine jug was produced by Gerz, one of the most respected makers from the Westerwald region of Germany. Crafted in the mid-20th century, this piece features classic salt-glazed stoneware, raised grape motifs, and a traditional German wine proverb in relief.
The jug is marked “MADE IN GERMANY” on the base with model number 2956, dating it to the 1950s–early 1960s export period. Its form and decoration were designed specifically for wine or schnapps, not beer.
German Proverb (Raised Relief)
„Je feiner schmeckt der Wein aus einem Krug von Stein“
“The finer the wine tastes from a stone jug.”
